5. Hanukkah Activity Centre

Hanukkah Jukebox

First listen to Al Hanissim. Listen for a couple of minutes. The first time it plays note down the single instrument you hear. Make a note of other instruments as they join in. You will soon notice a change in the style of music. It will continue to change a few times until it finishes.

Now listen to Maoz Tzur and again note how the style of music changes.

Do you see a benefit here for integrating the teaching of music with the teaching of Chanukah?

How would you integrate the teaching of the songs with appreciation for the changes in music style and increased sophistication of the instrumentals?

Would you say that the Jukebox is more useful in school or at home – or are there benefits in both contexts?

How would you make use of this aspect of the program in the classroom?

Dreidel Game

Does this game have any educational benefits?

What aspects of Chanukah would you be able to teach with this activity?

The Hanukkah Colouring Book

  • With what age would you use this activity?
  • Can you see any benefits for older children?
  • How informative are the pictures?

Note that when you return to a previous picture that you began to colour it has retained your work.

Do you see any benefits to this?

Lighting the Menorah

What would you say is the most valuable aspect of this activity?

Is there any way you would have designed this activity differently?

How would you use this activity:

a) as a whole class activity?

b) in small groups?

If you were to give your own guidance / support notes to the small groups using this activity, of what would the notes consist?

Is there anything about this activity that you think could be difficult or confusing?

44 Candles:

What can be taught with this game? Does it have a place in the classroom? What do you think was the purpose of including this game in the program?

Memory Challenge:

Same questions as above.

Nes-Scape –‘Virtual Website’

The four sections under Nes-Scape news could lend themselves to supporting short research projects. The first three sections are simply pages of text to read.

How could you use these pages and teach the information they contain in a creative way?

What comments do you have regarding this virtual website idea?

What do you think was the purpose of designing this section in this way?

Do you think it would achieve its goals?

Who Am I Quiz

Is this a ‘stand-alone’ quiz or an assessment of what has been learnt in using the activities?

Of what value is this quiz? Comment on : - The clues – The variety of answers – Level of challenge.

How could you use the clues as a basis for supplementary questions / activities?

Is this in any way a serious educational tool or just a compendium of fun activities?

Write a short review of this piece of software, briefly relating to its benefits or otherwise for school / home use and any ways in which it could have been improved.

This program will get you into the right mood for Chanukah and should provide opportunities for some creative learning.  It won't teach Chanukah for you but has a good deal to offer when you are ready to consolidate, revise and just have fun before the doughnuts and latkes arrive!
