Bereishit (Genesis) Chapter 42, Verses 7-9

7.  Yosef saw his brothers
and he recognised them
and he made himself a stranger to them
and he spoke to them harshly
and he said to them
"From where have you come?"
They said:
"From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

 

8.  Yosef recognised his brothers
but they did not recognise him.

9.  Yosef remembered the dreams
which he had dreamt about them
and he said to them:
"You are spies.
You have come to see the nakedness of the land."

Answer:
Yosef had grown a beard and that made it hard for the brothers to recognise him.
