Questions on the Daf:

1.  On the front of the daf Rav Elon points out that although the sale of Yosef was something unpleasant and upsetting, nevertheless it all happened for a good reason.

Can you think of anything that has happened to you that seemed bad but turned out to be for the best in the end?

2.  When is the first night of Chanukah this year?

3.  Why is it that we might suggest that Chanukah should be celebrated for seven days and not eight days?

4.  Try to understand the two explanations given for why we should indeed celebrate Chanukah for eight days (as we do).

5.  First, read the story, "Yehuda HaMaccabi and the Stolen Doughnuts."

     a)  Now, answer this:  How did Yehuda HaMaccabi help Zevi
     to make the right decision?

     b)  Are you able to answer the two questions at the end of the story?

  • Have you ever done something you didn't want to do because everyone else was doing it?
  • What do you think might help you do the right thing in the face of peer pressure?

6.  Many people think the Shamash on the Chanukia / Menora is just there for lighting the other candles; but what if you use oil?  You'll get pretty messy if you try to tip up the Shamash to kindle the other lights!

So, what is the real purpose for the Shamash?  Find out from the daf.
